How to Wrap a Tail

Tail wraps are used to protect the tail
when the horse is being transported in a trailer,
when a mare is being bred and to tame unruly tails.

Difficulty Level: Medium
Time Required: Five minutes

Here's How:

1. Put the horse on crossties or tether him to a post.

2. Brush the tail, removing any mud
and bedding that may be caught up in the hairs.

3. Lift the tail and let it rest over your right arm.

4. Hold the rolled up tail wrap in your right hand
and take the end of the wrap in your left hand.

5. Place the tail wrap under the horse's tail
and slide it carefully up as far as it will go.

6. Begin wrapping the tail, folding the end of the bandage down
and covering it on the next wrap to secure it.

7. Continue wrapping down the tail,
maintaining a consistent pressure.

8. Space your wrapping so that the wrap covers the dock, or tail bone.

9. If your wrap has tapes, take one to the left and one to the right
and cross them around behind the tail, bringing both ties to the front.

10. Tie the ties in a bow and tuck the bow in to secure it.

11. If your wrap has velcro, match both sides of the velcro and secure.

12. To remove the wrap, place both hands around the top of the tail,
over the wrap and slide the whole thing down and off.

Tips:

1. Beware when working around the rear end of a horse.
Watch his body language to anticipate movement or even kicks.

2. Care should be used not to put the tail wrap on too tight.

3. Tail wraps should not be left on for extended lengths of time.
